Today I took my 3/8' HF Torque wrench to PMEL to see how bad it really is. When tested, they found the following:Setting - Found value16 ft-lb. 16.17 ft-lb48 ft-lb. 48.83 ft-lb80 ft-lb. 81.67 ft-lbSince +4% ft-lb is the target range, not too shabby. We discussed use and storage and the DoD recommends to following for these tools:Storage: Store with spring set at lowest setting not toally relaxed.Use: Set to higher value than planned setting for use.

Click 6 times. Reset to desired set point.Anyway, I'm pretty happy for $10.Also, he has told me that he has checked a number of these HF wrenches and they have all been within accepable values. Where do you drive or fly has a lot to do with the quality of tools you require. IMHO For the average street driver a HF used 2 times a year is fine, but I am a tool person.

I have been using high end tools since I was 7 years old working with my father & grandfather. I am the person that goes to at least the mid grade tools for relialibility & long term confidence. I have 3x torque wrenches in my box that HF would not even come close to matching. I run aluminum lug nuts so I want a high quality torque wrench(and anti-sieze compound) so I do no drop a wheel and end up on the side of the road/track upside down. An old biker told me once 'that cheap food ain't good and good food ain't cheap'. I never had a silver spoon in my mouth but you have to make the choice between designer jeans and good tools (the GF or Wife will disagree). I am not for gold plated exotic crap but common sense price points will serve a person well.

Remember that most high end tools have a lifetime warranty. I the 80's had a Snap-On truck replace a legacy worn-out Snap-On rachet & socket that was forged in in 1951 according to his books. M2CW If your wife & kids will put your tool box in a yard sale when you die then the HF stuff is the way to go. Remember to reset the click wrench to zero or in the beloved words of the oil rig deck hand 'It will F.

up your clicker'. Happy shopping!! Don't, just don't. My neighbors wimpy HF torque wrench set to 30 lbs on it's inaccurate dial. Only my freshly calibrated Snap on it says it's only 22. You get what you pay for, and my neighbor was doing lug nuts on his mini-van with this! There is no calibration pin on this thing so even if you get is measured you can't adjust it correctly without doing the calculations by hand. The Snap On is cheap, it's replaced free if it breaks, calibrated for the cost of shipping, and who cares what position I leave it in?

It's digital! I use mine on aircraft, you want to fly with me if I use a harbor freight torque wrench wich should be good enough?I am not a licensed airplane mechanic, but do 'help' during my airplane's annual inspections. No chance getting tools mixed up-If it says 'Snap-On', it's not mine! If it says 'Craftsman', my mechanic won't touch it!So based on the experience of us Pelicanheads, it sounds like some HF torque wrenches are accurate, while others are not.Meanwhile, Craftsman and Snap-On torque wrenches are consistantly accurate.Though I'm not a pro, I'm going to stay away from HF torque wrenches., 07:36 AM # ( ). So a while back I used a digital torque meter to play with a few torque wrenches:While this was an interesting exercise I would not say it was entirely scientific. They were all fairly 'in spec'.

Just remember also that a torque wrench is best when you are setting it in the middle of its range. Settings at either end are prone to gross errors. Even though they give you a single # for error it is not consistent across the range.Having read here all posts I think we can all agree that if we have not calibrated the wrench then we really can't expect it to be accurate, regardless of brand. There is the expectation that if we pay more then we get better quality out of the box, however I am not so sure of that. Also, if we pay more there is the expectation that the product will stay in spec longer. Not sure of that either.Regardless, I believe that a torque wrench should be a quality tool in your tool box.

Seriously you guys are complaining about a tool failure that cost you an investment of less than 1/2 a tank of gas Spend the money and get a nice quality tool and have it calibrated at your local airport wrench's facility so you will know. Take it back the next year and see if it fell out of calibration.

It's just not that hard.
