Hi all,I'm a new Keeper (although I've played a fair few times) and I'm playing with a group of entirely new players, who've never played a role-playing game besides the Cthulu session we had this Halloween. We're all super-enthusiastic about the game, and I've always wanted to run a long campaign at some point in my life. I'm aware that the learned advice is to wait until both the players and the keeper are more experienced before running a complex campaign but I'm keen to strike while the iron is hot and the players are excited so I'm trying to decide whether to run Masks of Nyarlathotep or Horror on the Orient Express. From what I've read, MoN is slightly more demanding for both Keeper and Investigators because of its sandbox nature and the sheer amount of material, but I'm hoping that with the release of the new edition and the Companion, it should be easier to run and there is more support than for HotOE. My players absolutely love high-quality handouts and, from what I've seen, the new edition of MoN has these in spades.Any thoughts or guidance much appreciated!. I am a new Keeper myself and am about to begin a cobbled together campagin with my group (starting with The Haunting).I can understand the desire to start with a large epic, but here is why I didn't1.) Character/player dynamic is always better when they have gotten a chance to succeed or fail together.

Smaller scenarios allow this to happen without the fate of the world resting on their shoulders.2.) MoN and HotOE are such well loved classics that I would hate to deliver a subpar experience to my players by not having some trial runs under my belt first. I would much rather be sure I have my bearings before going into something so big and sprawling.3.) For new players, I feel that if they begin with something so large in scope and die quickly into it, they might be turned off. But if there is a single scenario that can be done in a night and they die or go insane, then it only serves as fodder for the next attempt at another story.Anyway, just my thoughts. I would say that if you continue with either of those, be sure to lean to the side of fun and story rather than the rules when possible.
This stuff can be dark and tough, so being sure to have fun is important.Best of luck. Hey,I started running CoC about two years ago with the same group over the course of that time, and I've finished HotOE and am running masks now. Honestly, I feel Horror is the better option for a first time Keeper. Your understanding of masks is absolutely correct, with regards to the sandbox stuff. For the players I don't feel it's much harder, but for the keeper, it is significantly more daunting.Take Horror, for contrast: any chapter is largely self contained. Instead of needing to be aware of all of the different moving pieces at all times, the locations are linear and broken into digestible chunks. This makes keeping a grasp on what your group should be doing much easier for a Keeper.
The physical edition comes with plenty of sweet handouts for investigators, also. These being said, both are amazing campaigns that are simply top quality. I think masks 7th ed is fantastic, so if you don't feel daunted by the task, then it is a wonderful play that I absolutely recommend. If you might be deterred as a Keeper by running something so grand in scope, then horror would likely suit your tastes. Great advice all round. My friend lent me a copy of the old edition of Masks so I'll leaf through it and see how intimidating it feels to keep everything in my head.

I'm kind of less worried about how much I have to remember than how intimidated the players might be, as they're still relatively new to the whole thing. The other consideration is the props. Judging by the Chaosium page, Masks as a PDF seems to offer higher production value props and handouts than Horror. But perhaps I'm wrong about. What do people think about the relative production values. I'm running Masks now with a group that includes several players new to roleplaying and others new to Call of Cthulhu. We've completed the new prologue (Peru) and are almost done with the first chapter (NYC). It's big, weighing in at 666 pages, but manageable because you really only need to focus on one chapter at a time.I haven't run HotOE or even read it in a long time, but the redesign on Masks is very good and I recommend it.
The new prologue is a nice, easy introduction for new players-it's pretty linear and doesn't require a lot of investigation, so they're almost certain to piece the mystery together and reach a satisfying climax in the final scenes. The first full chapter, in contrast, is wide open and will require them to think a lot more. And it's much more deadly. (4 dead so far.) But they've done a nice job modernizing the scenario-it's very open-ended and flexible and your players will almost certainly run through it in an entirely different way than mine have. (It's not a railroad and also not on a literal railroad.) They've also done a good job of dealing with the racial issues in a way that's sensitive, but not precious, and is also historically interesting (1920's Harlem was quite a scene). (Hilariously, the cult leader in NYC was able to seduce my 'woke-est' player by just talking a good line about black liberation and then inviting her into the cult lair, where he promptly fed her to their pet monster.)Also, the support is excellent. The book by itself is great.
But if you want to go all-in, and it is amazing. It's not cheap, but the quality is off the charts. My players spent probably 45 minutes just poring over one of the props last week for clues. Also, Syrinscape, which makes an app that generates background soundscapes, is producing -they're a little behind, but Peru is already out. The soundscapes are also really good, if you like that kind of thing.Anyway, Masks is the COC campaign, so I say go for it.
MoN is more demanding more on the sense of all the stuff you have to keep in mind, that said, I wouldn't discourage anyone to actually start running the campaign without previous experience, go for it.Horror on the Orient Express is written with high and lows in quality, the scenarios while self contained, require some extra work in order to not be a complete railroad, particularly Milan. Another thing is that the presentation of the props (Telegrams, newspaper clippings, diaries) is not really that good, so you will have to hunt for fan made props online.I'm halfway through HotOE and honestly, I can't wait to finish and run the new edition of MoN.
