I grew up in Upper Darby, PA (Home of the beloved Tower Theater), and the Tower and Spectrum we're like second homes to me! I immensely enjoyed countless Dead shows and Jerry Band early and late shows. Jerry acoustic a couple times.MAGICAL! I was there for this one, too. Although a bit foggy, still remember one of my faves, the 23+ minute Eyes. I want to thank y'all for the opportunity to listen to the show again, in a less chemically induced state, mind you. 'If you listen to some of the 79 stuff where things get really gooey, there is the 35 minute scarlet fire, and the 60minute Estimared-Eyes-Franklins where you know the persian had made it on stage. Things got particularly out of hand for Jerry during Dead breaks when he was with Khan doing Jerry Band shows. Listen to some of the spring 78 releases you can hear the coke in Jerrys over worked sinuses. With rare exceptions I can not listen to anything from 84-88 Jerrys voice is like a charred crack cinder.'

An excellent continuation of their seminal '79 fall tour - the Road Trips release at least keeps the damned thing together, as it does the following night.Set 1 - bookended by China Cat Rider and Music Never Stopped, both outstandingly played. Rest of the first set is fine, nothing astonishing, but.very. well-played.Set 2 - They begin this set with - count 'em -.four. songs topping 12 minutes each - Eyes doubles this - it's a real exercise in endurance, sustaining that kind of aura and ambience with real fire - and they do! Franklin's goes into this crazy meltdown jam that leads into a few minutes of free speed-jazz; this and the weird, swirling bits that straggle onto the beginning of Lost Sailor are the highlights for me.

Relatively uninspired but you really can't beat the setlist esp. The China-Rider opener. As I listen to the Stagger Lee and Peggy-O I can't help but invite people to compare them to almost any 1980's version (I like 6-14-85 Greek) because I think you'll see a strong argument for saying the band's musical evolution in the eighties wasn't really the sharp decline many heads claim. Jerry must be junked up because he is in a bit of a haze on these ones.

He keeps up on some but isn't exactly winding the band up. Not the best, not the worst. Nice eyes - seamless, and I mean seamless, transition right into estimated. Cool and unusual Brent piano solo in Estimated (8-19-80 Uptown is great too). I think there are better shows.
