The sheets produced,using this type of gasket, have smooth, squared edgesand are rectangular in shape. This study’s aim was to assessthe prevalence of overweight and obesity in adultLebanese and their associated determinants. Methods:Cross-secti onal survey on obesity in a representativesample of 593 individuals, 20 years and older wasemployed.
Interviews using a pretested questi onnairewere carried out and waist circumference wasmeasured. The questi onnaire included questi ons onawareness, knowledge, attitude and practices. TheWHO criteria for obesity classificati on were adopted.Results: The results show the prevalence of overweightto be 53.5% and obesity to be 18.16%, which is veryclose to previous reports although slightly higher. Theoverall BMI of the total populati on was in theoverweight category 26.37 ± 11.12 kg/m2 with malesslightly higher than females 27.5 vs. Thesesame resp ondents attained, in time, a maximal BMI of28.33 kg/m2, in the upper case of overweight anddesired a BMI of 23.83 kg/m2 within the normal weightrange. All three classes of obesity were encounteredClass I=14.16%, Class II=2.36%, and Class III=1.52%.Taking visceral fat as an indicator of obesity shows that3.92% of males are obese with waist circumference of102 cm, and 50.52% females are obese with waistcircumference of 88 cm.
As for the most properindicator for obesity, people agreed on overweight(88.03%) and waist circumference (80%). Maleresp ondents showed an underestimati on of their ownweight, while females perceived themselves moreoverweight than they really were.
The majority rankedobesity, the fifth am ong a list of eight most importanthealth problems in the country. Less than half (49.7%)believed that pers onal measures like diet and bodyactivity could c ontrol obesity. The eating and drinkinghabits of interviewees were in favor of fatness. Thegreatest majority were not aware of their daily caloricintake.
Physical activity was assessed in terms ofintensity, frequency and durati on, and was c onsideredas inadequate. On the other hand, almost two thirdswatch TV on a daily basis for two (36.27%), four ormore hours (35.08%). This is an indicati on of asedentary life style. To treat overweight and obesity,67.5% to 74.54% selected opti ons related to better foodquality and less quantity, and exercising more.Interventi ons like the use of medicati ons were selectedby only 23.3%, followed by use of a combinati onregimen of medicati ons and life style modificati on by18.05%. Other interventi ons like liposucti on 16.7%,bariatric surgery 7.25%, or hypnotherapy 6.3%, werenot popular; these were more favored by females.C onclusi on: Overweight, obesity and visceral fatshowed high estimates.
